KZ1000 shaft to chain question was created by thanson
hello, I have been having a hard time getting a straight answer to this question so I figure here is a good place to try. What internal engine/trans parts are changed from the kz1000 shaft drive to the kz1000 chain drive, in other words, can a person just swap all the parts from kz1000 shaft drive cases and swap those parts into chain drive cases? I am fairly confident the cases are slightly different where the shaft unit bolts to the cases from the chain version. Is there any difference in the trans output shaft or anything else for that matter? thanks

edit: when I refer the shaft drive model I am referring to the early "J" model shaft drive from the very early 80's

Yes you should be able to do that.
I did it on a MKII. Actually used a GPZ conversion.

See the end of this page. And search for the other thread.
Your cases should have two holes for the shift shaft.
If it doesn't make sure it is in the same location as it is on a chain case.
Swap the guts (output shaft), forks, shaft, drum, internal shifter lever, and cover.
