New Base Gasket
08 Feb 2014 07:09
No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI purchased a new base gasket from Kawasaki.com
It was a superseded number from the original ( 11060-1579 ) and is RED.
Im really not impressed with it! ofcourse the one pictured was the old style black fiber.
Has anyone used this new base gasket? is there any feedback on it?
Thanks, Spencer

No, don't know what that is. After the problems I had with my gasket set, I always wonder how long the "new old gasket" has been sitting around. The base gasket in my set failed. I ended up making a new base gasket from the 1/32" gasket material from auto zone and it has worked perfectly.

That looks like a Honda OEM gaset. It also looks like a 650 gasket  If you bought it from Kawasakie.com, how come it's an Ebay ad? .....
Vesrah Gasket sets are the way to go but I don't know if you can get just a base gasket. Generally OEM is the ticket for anything.

Kawasaki changed all of their gaskets from the black colored gaskets to those new red colored gaskets back in the late 90's if I remember right. The black gaskets contained asbestos and other nasty things, but they sure sealed up real nice!!!! The replacement gaskets never sealed as good as the old black ones. I had the service department and over the counter customers bitching about the newer gaskets weeping back then. You can thank our wonderful government for all the new style asbestos free and prone to leaking red gaskets.
After seeing all the problems with the newer "environmentally friendly" gaskets. I bought all the older style black colored gaskets I could after that. I still have at least 5 to 10 of every old style black colored KZ900/KZ1000 gasket stashed away in a big sealed Tupperwear container.
I would use some good old brush on K&W Copperkote on all those newer gaskets. Make sure you get the inner and outer edges of the gaskets too.

Kawasaki.com shows the new gasket (11060-1579) supersedes old gasket number 11009-030 (see below), so I assume 11009-030 was the black gasket mentioned. If that is the case, there are a couple eBay listings that claim they have part number 11009-030 (see below). If you decide to buy one, I would double check with the sellers to make sure that is the number on the label since their eBay pictures are not clear. Ed

I just put the ebay auction on for an example of the red gasket.....its the same gasket though. If you look at the ebay auction, the gasket has the Kawasaki parts number sticker on it. It's a Kaw gasket.

I have used the newer "RED" gaskets without any issues what so ever but..... I am very careful with gasket surface prep. but them again with any gasket I am careful with surface prep that is the key!!!

I would use 3-bond on the base gasket. As rarely as it ever comes off, the added sealing effect is well worth it.

It was a good point on the old style gasket. How long have they sat around and it what climate.....are they dried up or something else wrong with them?
I guess if Kawasaki is making the gasket, I would hope they interested in making quality items?
Well, one things for sure. I will let you know if its not working.
