While I'm asking... Is there a specific valve shim kit I should get? Once I get into it, I want to have parts available.

Steel,
You are correct,...I got confused. The rod goes in the hole just like mother nature intended.
Britome,
You may want to look for a replacement part that does not use ball bearings. later versions eliminated the ball bearings. Not sure what year they switched over?
Z1 has a nice shim kit,...make sure you get the tool for removing them.

"Steel rod goes in the hole" the line of the thread!
I ordered the bearings but if there is such a replacement part, I would be all over it.

Houston we have a problem....
All this talk about steel rods prompted me to try to push it in with a hammer. It wouldn't budge. This tells me the problem wasn't a simple bearing issue on that mechanism but something much more sinister.
Help!!!

WOAH THERE BIG GUY! I think it is really unlikely that you could disengage the clutch that way. Even stock springs are pretty stout. Sometimes the plates will stick after sitting up a while, but they can often be loosened up by rocking the bike back and forth with the clutch lever pulled in.
Try fixing or replacing the release mechanism in the first pic and be sure the cable is 100%.
The mechanism used through 1981was changed in 1982, so if you replace it, be sure to get the right one.

I'm here to fix your clutch. I can tune those carbs while I'm at it for no extra charge.

Don't do that......it's like trying to clean your dinky with a wire wheel.
Can you grab it and pull the rod out? To remove the screws you may have to get the proper JIS screw driver tip. JIS is actually different than a Phillips even though they look the same.

Thx, guys. Yes, I can pull my rod out... Heh heh
I won't do anything until the ball bearings come in. The clutch was permanently engaged before I pulled the assembly apart so I guess I'm over thinking.

All the parts came in from bike bandit. Glad I ordered a couple extra bearings. Feeding those suckers in the right place with the grease and getting the pivot arm positioned right took about 10 tries. In the end all is perfect and clutch works
I'm sure to have about a dozen similar problems. I hope I can lean into you all for my next issue.
Thank you very much!
