Look at the cams just right of the sprocket mount where the tach drive worm gear would be.

If one cam has one groove there and the other has none, they're 81 cams - if both cams have three grooves they're 82 cams.

The cams are coming in this week. I will look as soon as I get them. Just for general knowledge... Which one is which on the 81 and does it matter on the 82? Thanks for the help

For the 81 cams, the one with the groove is the intake cam (12044-1031), the one with no groove is the exhaust cam (12044-1036).

The three-groove 82 cams (12044-1037) are identical, the position of the sprocket determines which is intake and which is exhaust.

Edit: Removed some incorrect info, sorry - see my next post below for added info about the cam sprockets.

77 KZ 650 B1, 82 GPz 1100 B2.

What KZ are you installing them into? Earlier KZ's used a roller chain vs the HY VE chains used on the later KZ's and GPZ IIRC. Due to the different cam gear bolt pattern, you cannot bolt your stock KZ sprockets on the GPZ cams if your KZ is a pre-81 model, thus the need for the adapter can gears from APE. Someone will correct me if I am off base. If you are putting cams in, are you running aftermarket exhaust and intake filter/pods?

Cams are either driven by cable off the exhaust cam (early KZs )
or off the ignition ( late KZs ).

Learned something new today, I was under the impression that the cams were driven by the crank via a chain.

Just couldn't help myself
