I set the 1 - 4 piston to the T mark however the camshafts are completely opposite the manual and Lou D's pictures on his website. I was dumb founded how can this be. Can the engine still turn over with the camshafts opposite?
I am rebuilding a 1980 KZ550 and the PO said it hadn't run in 12 years and he thought the problem was the coil or ignition. I used a car battery to check the compression and got 90, 120, 120, 130. I then took the valve cover off to check the valve clearances. That's when I found the opposite camshaft positions. I am confused is there something I am missing or not comprehending or doing wrong?
Thanks Tomas

One camshaft revolution takes two crank revolutions, you're stuck in the middle so to speak - turn the crank one full turn till you hit the 1/4 mark again and the cams should align correctly.

nothing wrong. they are in time. ......1 revolution of crank will put them right per the manual....but DO NOT turn engine over without the cover or cam caps installed.........probably bent valves will result also has automatic cam chain adjuster......

Thanks for the response
Could I just remove the camshafts, keep the chain tight and rotate the crank 1 full turn instead of reinstalling everything?
Thanks Tomas

One four-stroke cycle = 1 camshaft rotation = 2 crank rotations, so in each cycle the crank will hit the timing mark twice - you're currently positioned in the middle of the cycle (2 strokes in) rather than at the beginning.

In other words you don't need to reinstall anything, just rotate the crank one full turn (= 1/2 cam rotation) to finish the cycle and you're set.
