Hi all, wondering if anyone has experience of this blasting medium. I’m looking to get a black engine stripped for repainting, and soda has been suggested to me. Part of the appeal is that I have a small blasting cabinet so can probably do it myself at home, a) I won’t end up breathing sand (although the mask cuts out most of it), and b) I suspect that it wouldn’t be quite as catastrophic if somehow I managed to get a bit of soda left in the oilways. Opinions and experiences, please !

Thanks,
Brian

Yes Soda is a fantastic media for blasting with, as it is non abrasive not damaging the metal. Get yourself a good quality mask and eye protection. The media dust gets everywhere unless you have an extractor connected to your blasting cabinet. Better to take it outside really. Engine you should still mask off oilways as you would not want to pack them, but at least the soda wont chew up your motor internals like Grit does if a few particles remain Best of all it desolves just wash away when your done :)

Set up dust collection, DO NOT rely on mask & goggles.
On my rig, there's a hose running from the blast cabinet to a bucket about half full of water, then another hose to the shop vac. The water catches a lot of dust, keeps the vac filter from clogging up.
