Patton, Ed-- great advice and tips. The work on the compression issue was sidetracked when I blew a fork seal. Been dealing with that. It was my fault-- I filled the forks to spec with straight 30 weight. Was not a good idea. Will definitely perform this poor man's test and report how the process went and what the findings were.

Would you basically just use an air hose and a 14 mil fitting (like the one on a compression tester) to do the poor man's test? Should I be wary of blowing the gasket with too much air?

Any cone-shaped rubber tip blower that fits and seals into the spark plug hole is okay.

Don't worry about blowing out the head gasket, as it's exposed to far greater pressures when the engine is running.

Good Fortune! :)

As far as fork oil goes, I suggest you try 15w Bel Ray Fork Oil. I've been using it for 36 years and it works great. Be sure to purge out what's already in there first. Ed
