KZ1000 Top End Noise?? was created by Drooz
I've got a noisy top end that sounds like it might be cam chain related. I listen to every other Z1/KZ that I have the chance to, and mine is way noisier than any other I've listened to.

It's a stock engine and was only pulled apart to check it before it went back on the road 5 years ago. There aren't a lot of miles on it, only a total of 30,000 km.

Any ideas or comments? I figure we should pull it apart and see what's going on there. :cheer:

This may be a dumb question, but have you adjusted the cam chain tensioner using the instructions in the Kawasaki Service Manual? Ed

Haha! No... not a dumb question at all!! :cheer:

Ya, I've followed the recommended cam chain adjustment procedure to a tee! :) That was my first thought as well.

If not already done, would perform a complete tune-up (new plugs, valve clearances, etc.), and sync the carbs.

Even where everything else is perfect, an out of sync carb can result in significant cam chain noise.

Good Fortune! :)

I would pull the tensioner first to see if it's at the end.... before tearing your engine down  Is the noise constant or worse when you rev and then close throttle? If you neglect to keep the cam chain properly adjusted the front cylinder rubbing block will break from chain slap on deceleration... Possible bad idlers, broken front cylinder rubbing block, bad cam chain adjuster roller , bad/at limit tensioner.. cam chains stretch , roller's , idlers and cam chains do go bad  Good luck , HTH

Looks like turboking pretty much has it covered. i would guess either needs tuned up or bad or wore rollers or bad worn tensioner.

Thanks for all the good input guys! I knew you'd come through! :cheer:

The issue is mostly at idle and just off idle. it seems to "clear" as the revs climb.

I never thought about the carb sync possibility! :) I have a set of BS34's ready to replace the tired old VM28's that are currently on there. It could very well be a carb sync issue. :)

Thanks again fellas!! I'll get at it and report back in a few weeks!

A very Happy New Year to you all!! B)

Yeap carbs out of sync and pods will give you a little more noise.
