If you've not rebuilt the starter clutch and like the convenience of electric start, I'd suggest you start with a basic starter clutch rebuild kit.
What's the bike? Usually a starter clutch rebuild is just a few springs, end caps and rollers.

I wonder if a stronger starter motor would overcome a weak starter clutch? I rebuilt my starter clutch about 4 yrs ago but it is acting up again. Might be worth a try...

I've repaired two starter clutches. Each of them had at least one mangled spring cup that rendered that spring ineffective. Adding more power would only lead to more slipping.
IMO

All you can do is make sure the rollers etc are in good condition and that the hub they run on is not worn.
Use a J/GPZ 4 brush starter motor if you are still on the old z9/1000 2 brush and it's not man enough to spin your big block.
The Honda cb9/1100 8kw motor is the one to have as a last resort but make sure you get the right one as some are only 7kw.

Bill, by spring cup do you mean the little end caps that go on the spring and pushes against the roller? Or the hole in the housing that the spring sits in?

Hi Topper,
Each spring pushes a cup or end cap against the roller. It's these end caps/cups that I've seen damaged. It's as if they were crushed sideways. I wonder if a longer cup would resist the side load better?
