starter clutch mod???? was created by Powerstroke_fan
Well i know summer is a little ways away, but iam gonna start working on the bike to get it ready for spring. i have a head gasket leak to fix a oil pressure light dilema and a speedo issue. The speedo reads 10 to 15 mph less than actual speed. but anyway, My starter clutch is going out from cranking over such a big motor. So i will be rebuilding the starter clutch. I remember reading where some people mention they done a starter clutch mod. What does that it involve? How is it done? Any info would be greatly appreciated. i also am thinking about putting a honda cb900 f starter on it. Ive heard it is the starter to use for the extra cranking power.

I think the mod most people perform is to remove the starter clutch and go to kick start only.

If you've not rebuilt the starter clutch and like the convenience of electric start, I'd suggest you start with a basic starter clutch rebuild kit.

What's the bike? Usually a starter clutch rebuild is just a few springs, end caps and rollers.

I don't know about a starter clutch mod, but there has been mention of using a starter motor from a Honda.

note: the KZR link in the topic doesn't work, but I think this is it 82 1000 starter

The bike is a 80 kz1000 1327 motor. More details are in my sig. But i will be rebuilding it with stock parts. I just heard larry c talking about a starter clutch mod and wasnt sure what it consisted of. if it was something good, i would do that instead of stock rebuild with a honda starter as martin_csr and i mentioned earlier.

I wonder if a stronger starter motor would overcome a weak starter clutch? I rebuilt my starter clutch about 4 yrs ago but it is acting up again. Might be worth a try...

I've repaired two starter clutches. Each of them had at least one mangled spring cup that rendered that spring ineffective. Adding more power would only lead to more slipping.

No such thing as a starter clutch mod.
All you can do is make sure the rollers etc are in good condition and that the hub they run on is not worn.
Use a J/GPZ 4 brush starter motor if you are still on the old z9/1000 2 brush and it's not man enough to spin your big block.
The Honda cb9/1100 8kw motor is the one to have as a last resort but make sure you get the right one as some are only 7kw.

Bill, by spring cup do you mean the little end caps that go on the spring and pushes against the roller? Or the hole in the housing that the spring sits in?

Hi Topper,
Each spring pushes a cup or end cap against the roller. It's these end caps/cups that I've seen damaged. It's as if they were crushed sideways. I wonder if a longer cup would resist the side load better?

I replaced my stock starter with a gpz 4 brush starter on my 1327. I found that the old starter was slowly dying without noticing it. Also check the rotor has no play as this was also causing the woodruff key to shear off. I believe the dying stock starter had a bit part in the woodruff key problem.
