GPZ head? was created by TerryK
Hey guys, I have a shot at an 82' GPZ1100 engine for cheap and I'm thinking about using the head on my KZ1000. I know the swap is doable but what year GPZ is the best for this swap? I think the 81/82 GPZ head is the same as the "J" model no?

My wife has the '81 gpz and it's a FI bike. At the very least, you'll have to plug off the injector ports.

Agreed...the '81 had the injectors mounted directly to the head, above the manifold with the throttle bodies. The '82 head had the injectors mounted on the throttle bodies, which then mounted to manifold. The '81 head can have the injector ports blocked off, while you don't have to worry about that with the '82 head. And yes, my understanding is that the early GPz heads were similar to the J model heads.

81/82 GPZ heads the same port wise as J head now 83/84 GPZ head a whole different story.

1000J or early twin shock gpz 11 is a good straight swap upgrade regardless of having to block off injector ports(depending on model) as the valve angles are the same as earlier kz's.
Later Unitrack factory ported heads are the ones for serious power if you are going bigger CC;s but more work is required in the piston crown department due to the steeper valve angles.
Any of the earlier heads will be a good no hassle upgrade, just remember to compensate for the 2 points of compression drop.

Thanks guys. I guess I pretty much answered my own question. lol As I already have a J head on the bike, its the 83-84 GPZ head I need, but those are like hens teeth these days lol.
