Will the engine run momentarily while starter fluid is being sprayed into the carb intakes?
Results could help indicate whether the issue is ignition related or carb related.

The acceptable leak down test results indicate that the backfiring doesn't result from an imperfectly sealing closed valve.

If not already doing, the throttle should be left fully closed while attempting to start a cold engine.

Good Fortune! :)

Hi there, this is my first post here. I am from germany so I do not know all the correct english terms, especially concerning the parts of a bike. But I do happen to have a 440LTD from 81. I had the very same issue once after I disassembled the mechanical part that adjusts the timing of the ignition according to the rpm. I had to turn that thing 180° to fix that. I guess I was lucky this was the only thing I had taken apart :)
hope that helps, Tim

Tim I fixed this (finally) awhile back, but that's exactly what it was. I cleaned the advance and put the center piece on backwards. Mechanic that worked for Kawi for years didn't even catch it past confirming it was a timing issue. Thanks for the help all!
