jumping out of 2cd gear was created by rlcarter
1980 kz 1000 G jumps out of 2cd gear i was told it could be bad dogs or bent shifting fork. i split the cases and did not see any obvious problem. i have never done this before. could i be missing something ? any ideas would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,
rlcarter

2nd gear dogs in tranny are rounded off.

quite possible that you will need to break engine completely down and spilt cases to get at tranny.

Common problem with KZ trans.

You would notice any rounding off of the dogs. Check the opposing slots in engaging gear to see of the slots have worn ramps. This is a well-known problem with these trans. 2nd gear is the trouble maker. Be sure the shift lever is postioned so that when you pull up on the lever you have enough leverage to pull it up far enough to get it fully into 2nd gear. I've seen this happen before.

Make sure you're shifting up hard. A lot of these bikes will drop out of second and into neutral if you dont shift up with enough force

Could be, the dogs/ slots on the gears are only slightly worn, however, the clearance (end-float) on the shaft with the offending gears is too much and allows the gears not to be firmly held together (dogs engaged). There is a spacer on the shaft in question may be left out or need larger one!
Unfortunately it requires a re-split of the crank-cases.

There is one item I can think of that has a history of a failure, it is the boss that supports the lever shaft. it is part of the lower case casting... A real curse of a job, because when it is repaired with an alloy weld, it fills the space where a spring fits ( 3coil or later four coil).

Lets hope its not this one. I'm hoping it will be something simple.
