Whats too much clearance on valves ?
23 Oct 2013 12:52
Bench shimmed my KZ650 at .0065 to .0075 on all 8 valves. 2 stayed within .0005, two opened up .001 and 4 stayed the same after bolting and torqueing it up.
Then at 100 miles and at 500 miles I checked em out. The 4 ex are right at .0055 to .0065 and one at .004 so I'll keep an eye on that #4 with .004.
The intakes have all stayed the same with 2 at .0075 and 2 at .007 although they were the opposite two at 100 and at 500 miles. Have 570 miles now. Pretty incrediable I think that they stayed so close considering APE did a complete valve job and replaced the guides.
What I quess I'm finally asking is .007 to .0075 ok for the intakes ?? I will admit it gets a little noisier after it warms. Hoping the Mobil 4t helps that a "little this spring". Just want to make sure running them at the max clearance does them no damage and if I figure right they will usually tighten up over the coming miles rather than get looser anyway right ?

The gap on mine vary both tighter and looser, but they have stayed within the published spec since day one. The specified clearance is .08 - .18mm (0.0031 - 0.0071 inches). I doubt that the valves that are 0.0075" would cause a problem unless the gap opens up more. I would keep a close eye on them and see if they get tighter or looser and adjust them again if needed. Ed

Your valves will be fine if they are set to the widest spec. I have found the my bikes all idle better when I set them to the widest spec. The exhaust valves are the ones to watch.

If they loosen up over time:
1. wear of shim
2. wear on cam lobe
3. loose bolt
4. wear on cam bearing
