Hmmm... I have a manual, and I just read it. I guess, once I get the carbs back on, I can just check the high and low timing to verify the advancer is working properly. I really should have thought of that first. Thanks for the reminder.

Couple of things for you to check.
Take the fuel tap of the tank and check that its filter is clear of debris.
Also check that it is not covered in varnish . this can happen and will starve the engine of fuel.
seems to happen with modern fuels.
check that the fuel cap vent is not blocked
try riding the bike with the cap open . If it runs ok the vent is blocked.
If you have an inline filter check that it is not blocked or restricting fuel flow.
check the voltage at the coils , is it near battery voltage?. you check the red or orange wire.
check that the plugs are NOT resister type. ie ngk b8es is correct but ngk br8es is not.
