If your '79 was like mine, it has the 28mm Mikuni carbs with the accelerator pumps -
I also recommend keeping the airbox, as I never got mine to run as well, consistently, with pods.
I don't remember my main jet size, but I only had to go up one step. Good Luck !

FWIW, I kept the stock air box and went with 17.5 pilots and 110 mains. It is spot-on from idle to redline. This is with the stock 26 carbs and the Kerker street baffle. If you go with one of the Sm, Med, or Large Competition baffles, your settings will need adjusted to that baffle size.

Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

Im with you 100% on the 4 into 1 on the pipes, I do not recommend pods, They can work, but the minimal power gains are not at all worth the tuning hassels. I have no idea what the flow numbers are, but i would wager that a K&N drop in filter will perform as well if not better than pods. I dont have an airbox for mine(76 900), but it is on the to-do list. I have had reasonable success with k&n rc-222 filters, but IMHO an airbox would be the ticket. save that pod money to put towards a nice rack of carbs, or a set of drop in cams.
