Camshaft and cam journal scoring?
27 Sep 2013 18:48
Howdy.
Can anyone tell by looking if the marks on these journals and section of the camshaft look like normal wear or serious damage?
Thanks

Pretty normal from those pictures. Not enough oil changes probably. But every start up, it takes a bit to get oil pressure there, so there can be some brief period of possible metal contact.

Thanks Motor Head. This head has a stripped and off center cam cap bolt hole. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth sending it off to get welded and re-tapped, or if I should try to find a decent used head on the bay of E, and if I do get a used head, if I should use my cams or try to find a head complete with cams

Journals look ok.
Cams aren't matched to heads so will work in another if you got one but it's a simple job to get the cam cap bolt hole helicoiled or time serted back to original size.
Any good engine shop can do this.
The time serts also come in a BIGSERT version for when say a previous repair has stripped leaving the hole too big for a normal size insert.

Like ZED1015 said, any decent machine shop should be able to fix the bolt hole. But I wonder if the head might need more done to it. What shape are the valves/ Seats/ Guides/ Stem seals. How many miles are on your bike?
When you pulled the cams, did you also pull the Camshaft Follower Buckets, and the corresponding shims for the valve clearances? You need to keep them in order from where they came out of. An old egg carton can work for that, or another organizing tray. You can do a quick check on the valves if they are seating, by filling the ports with gas or brake cleaner. If they leak, fluid will run out around the head of the valve. I would replace the stem seals with a new set, preferably Teflon,or Viton while the head is off.
When the head is going back together, you can set the valve clearances again on the bench, with either possibly moving a couple of shims around. Or buying a few new shims. These are available at z1enterprises.com along with gaskets etc.

Thanks guys. This bike only has around 10000 miles on it. I was pulling the cams to get to my shims when the cam bolt twisted off, which led to me screwing it up even more trying to use an extractor. There's practically no valve clearance... couldn't get my smallest feeler under all but 2 lobes, so I was gonna swap the shims out for the smallest I could get and strt from there (there's a shop nearby that will swap out shims free of charge).
I'll study up today and try to get the valves out and see how everything looks. I do have all the buckets and shims organized and labeled in individual ziplock bags. I finally found a shop that knows what a timesert is, so that's encouraging.
