KZ550 Oil Filter Bolt Leak

Hi all,
I'm kind of new to KZs--since April--and my '83 KZ550 A4 has been serving me well, until my last oil/filter change left me stranded.
The first time I did it it went without a hitch, but this time--after replacing the O-rings and using a new HiFlo HF401 filter, it began spewing Shell Rotella T all over the driveway a few seconds after startup.
I took it back apart, inspected everything--the only thing I noticed was that the flat washer is a bit wide and isn't quite seating in the filter recess--but since it worked before I wrote this off, especially after not being able to find the right size washer locally.
I put it back together and tried again, same thing--oil gushing out from the filter bolt when I start the bike.

Any suggestions?

Oil coming from around the bolt, or the outer filter cover o-ring area, or both?

It's only coming from around the bolt.

Wrong o-ring used from a cheap kit?

Could be I guess. It came with the filter (HiFlo H401).

You should feel the Fit when the Bolt goes into the Filter plate. Do this with just those two pieces. The O-ring should feel like it has tension when the bolt fits into the hole in the filter plate.

It wouldn't slide in to the plate until I installed the filter and tightened the bolt--or do you mean backing off once inside the plate? It seemed to be a very tight fit.

The O-ring 670 in Patton's diagram, should be on the neck of the bolt, near the bolthead end. This needs to fit snug, once on the bolt, into the bore of the filter plate. You can check this with the bolt and plate removed.

Okay, thanks-- I'll take it back out tomorrow morning and check it. It wouldn't go into the plate until I torqued it down, so I can see how the O-ring may not have seated properly.

I thought the o-ring for the oil filter bolt was 670B2016, not 670B1508.

670B1508 is only 8mm in diameter.
