not going in second gear
24 Sep 2013 09:12
Hi there. I have striped my engin and put in a new crank. Now just before total assemble and fastning i want to check the gears. So it does not go into second gear. Neutral and first gear works but get stuck going over to second. So check the extra gears asembly and does the same.
Any body can help. Or have i screwed up two gear assemblies?
Thanks

I'm not really sure what you're working on but most older Kaw's have a "positive neutral finder." You won't be able to shift into second until the output shaft is turning a certain speed.

If your bike is newer than 1977 it is normal. Beginning in 1978 a "feature" was built in using 3 little balls in the output shaft to prevent upshifting if the bike was not moving. Ed

Spin the output shaft while shifting gears, it should work then.

The kz900/1000/1100 etc had the second gear lockout bearings fitted from the beginning in 1972.
You need to spin the output shaft fast enough for the bearings to move out under centrifugal force whilst operating the gear lever.
You should then be able to select second, then on to 3, 4 and 5 without spinning the box.

Interesting! I thought they all got it at the same time as the KZ650 (1978). Thanks for the correction. Ed
