So looking at my budget for the rest of my KZ build. I will have paint, powder coat, and engine work left over. Paint should be about $1200, PC should be about $500, that means $1700. I think I can have $3800 in my build fund by spring. This would leave me $2100 for the engine. Do you think I can get my KZ900 engine built for $2100? Thinking head rebuilt with new springs & guides, 1015cc kit with bore job, all new timing components, etc? The motor looks fantastic for 60K miles on it. No cylinder ridge at all, and factory cross hatching. Thoughts? Recommendations?

How about Pit Stop Performance out of Orlando. They advertise here. I spoke to him once about doing a first overbore on my 900. He told me he normally does not do walk ins. No store front I guess. But he would accommodate me if I call ahead and I can drop the parts off. But he offers complete packages with pistons and boring included. Read the the material on his website. The guys is a guru. Very nice guys and very good price. Decided to put it off but when I'm ready I will certainly use him.

Thats funny, the three times ive delt with him, ive been disapointed or unsatisfied with him as a pearson and shop. hes been a dick to me, and is to important to talk to his customers. I still believe he tried to screw me out of my buttoned pressure plate for my lock up clutch. I never reccommened anyone to him. Instead maybe give john pearson a call. He treated me more than fair. He took the time to talk to me and discuss my plans with the bike. Hes a stand up guy.

Thanks for all the follow-up guys. I have spoken with Joe and so far seemed OK to me. I was going to have him do the head and add some APE springs for about $360. I have a local shop that would love to do the engine work. If the static compression ratio wasn't so dismal on the ZRX, I would consider a ring job and a hone to keep cost reasonable. I am trying to determine if I can get this done for the money I am planning on having available. The parts retail for $1800 that I am look at, which doesn't leave much for labor. I can do the work myself which saves money.

Hey Cory, if you want local guys. I had a valve seat cut here for 15 bucks. Seems that they have and do everything.

Yeah who is your local guys here? I got done talking with Joe today and my estimate with me doing all the assembly/disassembly work is around $2200. Not quite ready to pull the motor until I get my rear wheel set and aligned, so I have time to shop around.

Don't forget gaskets and cleaners and lubes and any new hardware you will need for the job into your costs.

I send my heads to Klemme Performance Mototrcycle for the guides and valve jobs. I would suppose that pistons would eat into your budget a bit. To me its an all or nothing thing with making modifications to these motors. Keep it stock; runs good, stays cool in traffic, maybe not to much of a kick in the pants. If your going to modify one thing, may as well do them all; ported head, cams, pistons and carbs.
