I did a valve job on my gpz750 and one valve still has no clearance. Yes, I went a shim size smaller until i got to the smallest size, still no clearance. Manual says to get the valves cut, which isn't a big deal. The only thing that confuses me is that if I make the valve seat smaller, won't that give me even less clearance? Seems like material needs to be ADDED to the valve seat.

I just need clarification before I take it to the machine shop, thanks

I'm sure the book is referring to reduce the over all length of the valve. In other words the end of the valve stem gets shaved down.

You need to cut the end off the valve. not the seat. I don't remember the exact amount, but you can grind a little bit of the end of the valve stem off.

I'm lucky that my snap-on valve facer has a stemming attachment . :) I can dial in how many thousandths to remove from the valve stem length and it still keeps everything square/flat.....still you can do the same with a cut off wheel or bench grinder and a steady hand......hopefully you will not have to remove much to get in pill range..... :pinch: just remember to check the keepers and cut/grind them accordingly if they protrude above the end of the valve stem or it will unload the retainer and may cause serious engine damage :pinch: best of luck with your repair B)
