So how many of you guys still have the fiberglass wrap on your baffle?

Anyone running the pipe with no packing? Does the baffle alone provide enough back pressure? I am trying out the 2" comp version and still trying to jet in a new motor.

Anything that keeps the cops from taking note of me is a good thing.
So YES I keep my packing fresh.

And I don't even think you can race anymore without packing in.
Dang sound meters at all the tracks now a days.

Wow! What is the world coming to? This motor has not been easy to get my pilot jets in a happy spot. Surprised at how small they seem to want to be. Not there yet but close.

If that photo is the bike you are working on.
My first guess would be the stacks are your problem.
They look great but work like poop on the street.

Are those RS36'? I have a very similar build as yours. 82 GPZ1100 engine with 1135 MTC 10.5-1 pistons, ported head, RS36 carbs, Kerker pipe with race baffle. My cams are stock however. The Mikuni's were almost spot on right out of the box. I ended up with 138 main jets, #40 pilots and the needle in the 4 slot from top. It runs really good with only a very slight lean spot between 3000 rpms and 3500 rpms. My lean spot I think is caused by the race baffle.
Try running filters and see what happens, I am not a fan of velocity stacks. I don't care what people say but running without filtration buggers up the intake valve seats and with all the money I have in my head I want to keep it running good for awhile.

Sorry guys that was a photo the day I put the motor in. It has K&N filters the big ones just like the green bike above.
I will go get a modern photo.

OK filters on the street are cool.
What are the specs. on what you have in them now?

And are they RS36?

The more info we have the smarter we get.

Its a 84 motor, head ported enough to take out the letter, then the valve bowls have been opened up very much. 1170, 10.25:1 pistons 410 cams adjustable sprockets. RS36mm carbs. I found success/progress today with a 80 mile ride and a heat gun. Packing out of the pipe. Trying to find the camera...

On my Vance & Hines, the glass wrap came from the factory with a piece of tape holding it in position around the baffle shaft. It was completely blown to the back half after one short ride. I tried wrapping the glass with a piece of wire to keep it in position, and that failed to work too, so out it came.

There are way too many Harley blup-blups around here, so I figured my contribution of noise would be of little concern to anyone, and so far, so good. Besides, just easing off the gas a little quiets it instantly (and dramatically) when necessary.

Everyone uses the masking tape on new pipes.
As we all know it's junk.
The best stuff I have found for replacement is called "rock wool rope"
They use this stuff to seal big and I mean HUGE industrial boilers.
It's just like rope but braided out of Fiberglas
Just wind several feet of this stuff on and you are set for a LONG time.
