DYNA S ignition ****help***
15 Aug 2013 09:10
Gentlemen.......I need assistance. I have recently purchased a DYNA S ignition for my 76 KZ900....(new coils/wires etc).installed in the bike and fired up immediately. THe bike ran awesome for a few weeks. After some time I lost spark on 2-3 cylinders!!!? After tracing my steps......checked and double checked, I determined the DYNA S to be the problem. I returned it to DYNATECH to be checked and they returned it saying there was nothing wrong with the module. I reinstalled the unit, double checked all connections, and still no spark on 2-3 cyls??? Am I missing something?? Any suggestions???

Here is the link to their trouble shooting page.

I would have all 4 plugs out, then swap the primary coil wiring to see if the same side is dead or if it switches to 1-4. If it switches to 1-4, and the 2-3 now sparks, check for voltage at the offending side on the coil. Check the signal side for continuity from the Dyna S to the Coil,if all good then I'd say Bad Dyna S.

Thankyou for the link.........as you suggested.....I did this test initially and determined it was the bad module.......so I returned it to DYNATECH. They returned the module and indicated NO issues with the module but the problem remains??? That is why I'm so confused

Swap small wires from 1-4 coil to the 2-3 coil. If 2-3 does not spark, then the 2-3 coil is bad.
(The motor will not run, wired this way, but you can check for spark.)

Thanks........purhcased new coils at same time I bought the ignition.....and I don't think they are the issue as I am not getting a signal from the Dyna module when I try to set the timing ( as instructed by Dynatech ) for 2-3 cyls!!? Next test is to check distance on 2-3 pickup on module to see how far ( if possible ) the module is away from the sensor? Dynatech claims any further than .040" and the unit will not pickup any signal.......it's worth a shot
Thanks for the help

15 Aug 2013 16:00 - 15 Aug 2013 16:09Wonder if you have a bad wire or connector in the circuitry going to the hall effect sensors.and I don't think they are the issue as I am not getting a signal from the Dyna module when I try to set the timing ( as instructed by Dynatech ) for 2-3 cyls!!?

I had the unit checked by Dynatech and they say no issue with the unit or wiring harness.
When I get time I'm going to check all connections again.

16 Aug 2013 09:53While the mounting is an issue with these Dyna coils, I see most have been blowing a fuse when it is shorting.Old Man Rock wrote: Verify coil signal or power is not touching/arching to the frame on the mounts....
There are posts where the cure has been a Nylon Spacer in place of the Metal spacer for the screw/ bolt on the end of the coil with the terminals. Ace Hardware store has a selection.
