I bought an 83' KZ440 and the baffles are worn/rusted beyond repair.
I am looking to replace them with some EMGO universal mufflers or something else.
anybody has any experience with replacing the mufflers? will I absolutely need to rejet the carbs? I have limited experience with tuning.

I am looking for a deep/humming sound no loud/obnoxious harley sounds tho

any input is greatly appreciated

Johan

p.s see attached photo of my bike how much would you have paid for it?

Assuming the bike has the stock air box and that the new mufflers have baffling I doubt that you will need to rejet. Ed

I am looking for a deep, humming sound any suggestions on what brand I should start looking at?
I know this is not a 4c but I'd like to get as close as possible to it :D

p.s
stock airbox,

I was going to install POD filters but I ditched that idea, way too complicated with these carbs.
I am going to turn this bike into a cafe, modify the frame and all the cafeish jazz but keep the airbox, and just make it super pretty with a repaint and such since I'll be ditching the side covers. I hate plastic on motorcycles, reason why i never had much interest for modern sport bikes.

thank you.

Appears to be an unmolested and well cared for stock bike, which are becoming increasingly rare as examples are modified for whatever reasons, not-with-standing that fair market value is usually decimated.

Good Fortune! :)

You may already know all of this.... JCWhitney & JPCycles etc list Dunstall replica mufflers - megaphone type end or cone type. Emgo & Helix Racing are a couple of the brands. They fit the 70s 650s really good (see pic). Fitment on some bikes may be a little problematic, because some mufflers have a recess for center stand clearance, so the stand may bang against them... not sure about the 440, though.

Here's verner-650's bike w aftermarket mufflers. I don't recall what brand they are but probably Emgo.

those are exactly the ones I was looking to buy, just not sure how it will fit on my header, because I have to cut the pipes first.

ill cross reference the header on that 650 with my 440 and see.

thanks

I don't think the cross-ref is going to be much help. Remove a muffler cover & measure where you plan on making the cuts, then compare that to the fitment specs on the new mufflers. You may have to come up w a muffler gasket of some sort. Helix lists an exhaust sealing tape for muffler joints.

I bought the emgo bullet mufflers for my 400 but with the way the PO cut the stock exhaust they were too short and hung too low. They sure sounded good though...I replaced them with MAC replacement mufflers for the KZ400 and the fit is 100% better and much quieter. I know I went up one size on the main but am still fighting a cutting out issue at full throttle.
Search the KZ400 site under my handle for more info.

do you still have them? or have a pic of them on the bike?

the 440 has a pipe connecting the two mufflers and looks like thats going to go with the old mufflers

Here are the emgo shorties. They sounded cool but hung too low.

These are the MAC mufflers. A much better fit but a tad too quiet.

measured the circumference of the headers, calculated diameter, gave me 38.5 or something.
so thats 1 1/2 in so we all good.
