How to replace clutch cable, 82 LTD1000?

Hi guys. I'm on a real shoestring budget. The money I was saving up for the manual got spent on a new clutch cable when mine gave out. I figured "how hard could it be?". On my KLR I think you need a screw driver and a pliers..... On this thing it "LOOKS" like you have to take that whole left side cover off. I took off the little two inch cover with the two allen bolts, but that didn't seem to be it. What am I missing here? Do you really have to take that whole left side cover off to get at the end of the cable? I often find myself making things more complicated than they need to be, and am trying hard to avoid that this time. Can somebody save me from myself before I start taking things apart that i shouldn't and end up with a basket case?
Thanks for any advice.

Yes you will need to remove the front sprocket cover to get to the cable. On mine you also have to remove the footpeg bracket in order to get the shifter off the shaft also. No big deal. Just ordinary hand tools.

Do your self a favor, when you are there with the sprocket cover off. Disassemble and clean the clutch actuating lever, it has roller bearings and grooves that need cleaning and fresh grease.
Look at this service manual. Its for an 1100, but the clutch and cable is the same. Most of the bike is the same actually.
