I gotta ask - what's wrong with the stock filter? You might say it was engineered to work with the engine. ;) Ed

It was designed for that engine, but technology has came along way since the kaw gods invented them. You would think that there would be a aftermarket filter, besides the pods.

Look at this. I run one, used them for many years in dirt bikes. Washable oiled foam. It will last and last for years. Extremely good filtering, low restriction. Oil the foam, and use grease one the foam strip where it seals to the box. Way better than K&N, easy to clean, 1/4 of the price, and you Can get it clean.

Do the factory air cleaners not eventually go bad? I'm used to having to replace air filters every so often. If there's a good way to clean the oem one, could save me some money, because I still have mine, but I had switched to a K&N filter (not pods, just a cylinder drop in one) thinking it was high-time for it to be replaced.

A foam filter won't last forever, so it probably should be replaced every so many years. Or replace it when the foam or foam gasket deteriorates or gets damaged. common sense stuff. The service manual has servicing info.

That was my basic thought with replacing it. It seemed old and crusty, and due for replacement. But Ed's comment made me wonder if I might be wrong if he was still using the stock filter.

I do use stock air filters. You can use a shop vac to vacuum the outer surfaces to remove bugs, or dirt (I do this at about 5,000 miles). I replace mine about every 10,000 miles. I suspect I could go longer with no negative consequences, but I bought several stock filters a while back so I don't mind replacing them. Of course, if you ride in an area with more stuff in the air (dirt roads, etc.) you probably should vacuum them and/or change them more often. Ed
