KZ550 Oil question was created by nickleo373
Hey everyone.
I was checking the oil on my 81 kz550 and noticed while the bie is on its sidestand the oil level is in the middle of the high and low oil markers, when its standing up the oil is over the high marker, and when its running standing up thr oil is too low to be visible. Should i add more oil even though its above the high marker when it's not running?
Thanks

The bike must be on the center stand when checking the oil. If you are missing the center stand, have someone hold the bike level while you check the oil level. Otherwise you will overfill it. Ed

Thanks Ed. I put it up on its center stand and its still over the high line when its not running and when it is running the oil isn't visible through the hole. Is it best to leave it alone or add more?

When oil level is checked, the engine should NOT be running.

Level should NOT exceed the top line -- maximum fill line -- when the bike is straight upright.

Good Fortune! :)

Don't add more. You must have the engine shut off and wait a few minutes before checking oil level. Think of it this way - when the engine is running the oil pump is pumping oil through all the oil journals in the engine to lube things. At that point, oil is flowing from the crankcase through the pump, etc. so if you look in the little oil window you can actually see oil moving rather than standing level. This makes checking the oil impossible while it's being pumped through the engine. When you shut the engine off, some of the oil is still up in the cylinder head, in the journals, etc., so checking it before that oil has a chance to drain down into the crankcase can give a false reading. If you let the bike sit on the center stand in a little while the oil will have drained into the crankcase and the oil level shown in the little window will be the actual level of the oil. At that point you want the oil to be between the two marks on the window, preferably near, but not above, the top mark. If you have added too much oil and the level is above the window, you can siphon some out using a small diameter clear plastic tube through the oil filler hole. Ed
