cam degreeing question was created by Roadflyer
I have a pair of Kenny Harmon KD grind cams 380 lift 280 duration in my bike. The bike runs great, a little soggy on the bottom end but really pulls hard at 7000+.
I previously posted the same info and it was suggested I degree the cams to 108 centers.
I finally got a copy of the specs from Harmon and the lobe centers work out to 105 intake and 102.5 exhaust. Doesn't that sound a bit tight for mild cams??
I have no idea where they sit in the bike, I just bolted them in and timed them per the manual.
I would assume that Harmon knew what they where doing when they made the cams. so when I degree them, if I find they are out quite a bit perhaps I should trust Harmon and use their specs. however, if they happen to be very close when I degree them how much should I change the timing to gain a bit of low end? 105 / 102.5 to 108 / 108 sounds like an awful lot of change to me.

On my "79 St it's 1105,.395/.385 and around 266°.
I advanced both cams from the stock 110° to 102° intake and 108° exhaust.
At the same time the centrifugal advance was modified to provide less total advance and to do it at a slower rate.

So, how is the power curve on your bike now?

I had stock ignition timing on my bike and it was working fine at first with 92 fuel. As the weather has gotten warmer the bike has started to ping for a moment when I open the throttle at low revs. I slotted the ignition plate to take about 5 degrees of initial timing out and also switched up to 94 fuel. I wish I had the 28 pumper carbs that come on the us model.

Power is great, will pull from 1500 rpm in 5th.
The power surge you get at 4k stock it happens on my bike closer to 3k.
It just keeps on pulling like a big ol' turbine from bottom to top.
The only place it might be lacking is clear up top because of the stock 28s.
Most of the time I just grab a had full and run it between 3k & 4k and that keeps me ahead of traffic.
On the ignition side I trimed the counter weights to slow the advance, full at around 7k.
And a spot weld with a tig on the stops to limit total to 34°
Before I was seeing 55° to 60° at 4k.
