welding the crankshaft, questions... was created by kamakazie1000
Ok so I found a local Houston heliarcher that will weld my crankshaft for a fair-ish price, but now I have a few questions.
I would think, very well may be wrong, that the crank would need balancing after the welding, how would you balance it with the rods on and after it's welded?
Any help or knowledge regarding this kinda business would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you want to balance it after welding?
Nothing is added or removed, it's just melted together.
Using TIG right? And not a MIG wire feed welder?

I know there are new names for those two welding processes, but screw em, I'll just call them by the names I learned a long time ago.

A fairish price would be around $25 if it's just to weld it.

SO Since you live in Houston TX

Why not go to Mr Turbo and meet Terry Kizer and ask the man in person ??? ;)
Im sure he can tell you where to go get any work you may ever need done. That's where I would be.

It's a little more then just toss it on the welding table and run a few bead's.

To do it right the crank need's to be press'd apart
and inspected.
Look at the crank pin's the roller bearing's and the rod's
replace ANY part that is not 100 percent perfect.

After that it get's pressed back together and true'd before welding.
Take's more then just a guy that weld's to do it right.

I would first index the rods and check for any excessive rod wear. If anything is questionable repair/replace it.

You guys are correct. That said I had mine welded up by a buddy in a welding shop. It has been about 7 years now and though I don't ride it far or a lot I ride the snot out of it when I do. Didn't have the dollars then to do it right.Hopefully it will continue to hold up.

You will probably be fine for a very long time Wayne.

My first crank welding was done by a local welding shop with no other work done and it was fine even with a big block sitting on it . Now that was in 1979 , but whos counting.
That being said It is still better to have a pro do it and have a pro look it over for wear considering the age alone

Your crank should last a long time. It all depends on the bearings and rod wear/play. From what i understand that the cranks wernt very well balanced and alot of the cranks were out from the factory. I heard that your not gonna really notice it being out unless your drag racing and are after every second you can get. but welding it is a good idea if your hard on it and have performance work done.
