Neutral Light Flickers was created by david-b
Hey all;
Finally got around to getting my GPZ750 up and running and so far so good. I rebuilt the carbs and just been getting her going along. A problem I'm having though is that the Neutral Light sometimes isn't always on or flickers. Sometimes it will be on solid though, so seems like a loose wire or something, but don't know how the bike sends that signal to the cluster. Kind of hard to know what gear the bike is in when the the light doesn't always work right.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks
/D

Wire to the neutral light may be shorting out to the frame/ engine making it ground out, which turns the light on. The switch its self could be bad also, which is under the sprocket cover. Wiring diagram should be here on KZR, in "File Base" top right of the page.
Shouldn't be to difficult to fix.

Perfect I will check that out.
Is the wire itself in the wire loom? I didn't look too hard at the setup yesterday as it was getting dark when working on her last night. I assume if you take the sprocket cover off, it will leak out the oil, correct?

I'm excited to get this bike running. Working on getting my license right now finally and then be able to enjoy it.

Thanks!

As Motor Head said, take a look under the sprocket cover. The switch should look similar to the one circled in the pic below. Ed

Fantastic, thank you.

May be a stupid question, but I work on cars... this is my first bike. I can remove the sprocket cover without draining out the oil correct? Used to having sprocket covers keeping oil in.

It won't leak oil when you remove the engine/sprocket cover, but some oil will drain out if you remove the neutral switch.

If it's only flickering when the transmission is in neutral, then it could be a poor or dirty connection at the neutral switch... there's typically a lot of grunge behind the engine/sprocket cover from chain sling. Also, there's a pin that the switch contacts & I think the contact point of the neutral switch can get worn.

Perfect thank you.
Sometimes it's just not on. I'll shift around and then maybe the light will go on. I'll take off the cover and check out the connection and clean it and see what's going on with it.

Thanks!

If you've never had that sprocket cover off be sure to have a couple rolls of paper towels handy. No oil will leak out, but it can be pretty greasy under there from chain lube slinging off the chain at the counter-sprocket. ;) Ed

FYI the switch is actually the ground for the light not the positive feed. So a quick way to diagnose the switch is to take a OHM meter and test the continuity between the switch and the ground.
