So I should just hone the cylinder, button it back up, and save up for an 810 kit?

That's what I'd do, otherwise the bike just sits there all summer while you struggle to save the money to buy all the parts.

Just ride it till winter, then tear it down.

a fresh hone,
a new set of rings(on that piston only)that have the proper ring gap.

should go a long way towards stopping the smoking.

Hone cylinder for 5-sec, put it back together, run engine, check compression and be happy.
I bought a Lincoln, engine was completely filled by water. Water was there a few weeks, cylinders were rusty.
Honed, installed new rings, perfect compression!

Okay,
The original cylinders were to badly damaged to be saved, so I'm using a spare set that came with the bike. They just came back from the machine shop after a light hone to clean them up, so now I've got everything I need ( I hope) to put the engine back together. I have three questions.
1. Should I do anything to the piston to remove the scuffing on the front face? I can't see it, but I can feel it with a fingernail.
2. How do I set the ring-end gap?
3. Can I get the cylinders over the pistons without a ring compressor? I really don't want to buy a tool that I'm only going to use (hopefully) once.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

1- if the scuffing offends you lightly buff it off with scotchbrite or fine (like 1000 grit) emery cloth
2- you set the ring end gap by putting a ring in the cylinder and using a piston to push it down enough to make sure it is square in the bore.then using feeler gauges you measure the end gap.
.012-018 thsnths(.31mm-.46mm)is the target for your end gap.
i clamp a file in the vise and hold the rings in my hand and pinch both ends together on the file and lightly file back and forth then check until i have my target number.
3- if you are patient and careful you can get the cylinders back on without a ring compressor.

forget about 1,2 or research internet/read manual. I don't repair engines w/o service manual.
Buy ring tool, then return it or keep it. you don't want to break/bend springs.

That's pretty smart! I don't have an old license plate, so I may have to use some "energy drink" containers ;) Think that will work?

:pinch: I took the #3 piston off to buff out the scratches and install the new rings. When I installed the piston back onto the connecting rod ( using a new clip), I noticed that it wasn't pivoting as freely as the others and felt a little stiff. I had also put the wrist pin in the freezer to ease installation. What gives?

Could try reversing the wrist pin to see if it makes a difference.
