Hey guys Anthony here,

I'm looking to be tearing into my 81' LTD this winter for a ground up rebuild and I want to see what kind of power I can muster up from it. B)

I'm thinking about a aftermarket or custom CAM but I don't really know where to start with this, maybe even have it balanced and what not I just want it to be a little more than it was when I tore it apart.

Anyone have any recommendations on places, companies, or ideas? I'm open to anything!

Anthony,
Megacycle has always been my cam supplier of choice. Good products and service. Good luck, Paul

How much money you wanting to spend?
I think the record out of a 750 based motor is 256 RWHP, held by Lorcan Parnell, a member here. And it would take a pile of money to beat that with a 750. I think I can beat it with my N/A ZX12R, but it took a lot to get there, and I started out with a 1199

810 kit with GPz750 cams, carbs, and head, with a decenter header will probably make you smile. Friend of mine has a 84 GPz750 with an 810 kit and the head cut 0.025", and he's really happy with it.

I'm willing to spend when it comes to my internals ;)

It's what is inside that counts

I'd like to just get as much as I can get out of what is there. I haven't done too much research. I am going to end up getting it all powder coated black so I think I might as well just have it machined and get new internals while I'm at it. Is the 810 the biggest I can go?

This sound fun :woohoo:

 POWA

I'll second the Megacycle cams.

The first question you have to answer before you buy cams is "How are you going to REALISTICALLY ride the bike. Be honest with yourself on that one and then select the cams.

If you're building a real hot rod, you'll want a rack of good carburetors. OEM CV carburetors and hot rod cams don't make a good street motor in general. You can run into issues with jetting that you might never resolve to your satisfaction. Mikuni RS or Kehin CRS or FCR are the ticket. They don't come cheap.

471-00 or 471-70 would get the job done. 471-10 with and 810 kit, good carbs and a ported would make you sit up and take notice quite nicely....

Call them well ahead of time. You may have to send your stock cams to them as cores. You'll also want to play it smart and get good valve buckets.

The setup Steel mentioned would also make a nice street motor if you can find the cams.

The ticket to happiness if picking the right combo and not scrimping on anything that makes it rock solid [buckets]. You'll find what you want comes with a big price tag. There's no recovering the cost in a resale either. Forget all about economics if you're after a stunning motor.

No kidding! I received a big chuck of change as Social Security Disability back pay, so I decided to build a big hp motor. Started with a ZX12 and could have bought a new ZX14R with the money I've invested! :woohoo:

But "I" built the 12R motor, and that's important to me. B)
