oil leak

I have a leak that is coming out of my foot shifter shaft, I am assuming that is the transmission gasket. If so, how much of a pain in the ass is this project to do? 1982 kz 1100 shaft. The reason it intimidates me is because of the shaft drive which I think needs to come off to do this repair.

Shift shaft seal. That' should be engine oil not gear oil that you are seeing. I get a drop or two from 650 after a ride. Not sure if the shaft adds any complexity to the repair though.

I've had to fix this before. boatdrinks is right. Shift shaft seal. It is a pretty easy fix. Drain the oil, take off the clutch cover, and sproket. There is another cover under that, which the shift shaft comes out of. Take out those screws, and replace the seal. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

Finding the correct seal will probably be the hardest part unless it is still available from Maw Kaw. If not available that way try a hydraulic shop. They typically have a wide variety of oil seals.

I'm not positive which seal you need, but if it's the one in the diagram marked "92049" it is still available from Kawasaki so any online or local dealer can order it for you. Partzilla lists the price as $4.35. Ed

You are right, its a bit different for a shaft drive. You won't be removing a sprocket.
Have a look at the parts breakdown, seal # 92049 which is #92049-004 a very common seal.



I see 650Ed already posted the picture.
I would screw into it with a small sheet metal screw, and grip with a pair of pliers, to pull the old seal. If you have a small slide hammer even better. Get the old seal out, and clean the shaft and case hole, and install the new seal.

Please let us know how the repair went, as mine has a slight leak there too. I bought the seal awhile back, but figured the trans cover had to come off to replace it, which would be an involved process. So I've been living with the minor leak.

Shouldn't have to pull the cover. Just change the seal. It will come out, its just a small surface area showing to get a tool onto. But you can get it out, sometimes a small seal puller, or other pick tool. A small slide hammer with a sheet metal screw works pretty good for seals. They make several seal pullers, but most are to large for the little seal.

After removing the seal inspect it for any part numbers or dimensions. Most metric seals list the dimensions on the housing. Ex, "10 18 7" calls out a metric seal that fits a 10mm shaft, 18mm housing and is 7mm thick.

Once you retreive this info you can save a lot of time by calling your local hydraulic and bearing shops before leaving the house. If you fail to find one locally there are plenty of online seal retailers who stock a plathora of metric seals.
