Hey everyone. I have a 1980 KZ750 H1, and I've had a starting problem since I got the bike and have finally pinpointed it to the gear inside my cases that my starter motor gear engages. - it shakes and is loose. I don't have any info on it from when I bought it as far as maintenance, so I'm looking at this in a positive sense to see what kind of condition it's in. Has anyone else done this before or have any tips for me? I have the knowledge to do it, but I've never done it on this old of a bike. I plan to order a full new gasket kit before I get in there, and my experienced mechanic friend says it's the bearing that's probably bad on the gear. Are those hard to find? Any input is appreciated.

Good news! Assuming you are talking about the starter gear (marked #18 in diagram below) you do not need to split the cases to replace it, its bearing, or related pieces. In fact, splitting the cases wouldn't help you get to it at all. You get to it by removing the oil pan. You can do this with the engine still in the bike. While you are in there replace the starter gear and all the related pieces (3 - 6); they are still available as one assembly. Here are a couple links that contain info that should be helpful. Ed

That's great news! Thanks for how thorough you went. Hopefully it'll be a snap now. I'll check it out this weekend when I get home and post how it goes. Thanks again!

It's not a snap or easy but with a manual you can do it in a weekend.

I am a driveway mechanic and did it in about 8 hrs on the service stand. Just take your time and remember to get a new oil pan gasket and right case gasket
