78 KZ650 won't start... humidity or heat? was created by rhb629
I'm at work and my bike will not start. It's 93 degrees out right now with 50% humidity, and the bike has been sitting in the sun most of the day.
I noticed this morning it was idling a little low, but I was able to use it no problems. When I went on my lunch break, I noticed even with the choke open all the way I was still getting low RPMs. If I tried to give it gas or adjust the choke it would die.
It's low on gas and on reserve, but I opened the tank and I can still see some gas in the tank and in the gas line.
Is it possible the heat and humidity is doing this? It progressively got worse trying to idle it, to the point now where I can't start it at all or it dies after 1 second.
Maybe or maybe not related. I was riding on the highway earlier and noticed the bike would start to rev low when I was coming to a stop and it would sometimes die. Another time when I was idling in traffic for a while I had the same problem. I was able to throttle it though and keep it alive barely.
Any ideas?

Check your gas for water content. keeping your gas tank low on fuel in high humidity allows water to condense and go to the bottom of the tank which then gets into your carbs.

I think you're right; that would make sense. I came by later and put some fresh gas in. Was worried about draining the battery from trying to start it so much so I hooked it up to the car. Took a couple tries but it fired up and idled nicely. Started it again this morning and no issues. Thanks!

If you ever hook it up to a car or other vehicle make sure the car engine is NOT running. You can wreck the bike's electrical system jump starting it from a running vehicle. Ed

I suggest removing the petcock from the tank and making sure everything is clean.
I normally get fuel before I hit reserve, but a couple years ago I had to turn it on reserve when I left for work in the morning. Bike shut down a mile away with no fuel getting to the carbs. Pushed it back home and discovered a pyramid of rust around the standpipe (where bike gets fuel in "ON" position) to just below the top. About 2" above the reserve port, so the reserve port was totally blocked, when I ran out of fuel in the "ON" position and switched to reserve, the bike died and would not start unless I poured gas in the tank.
Possibly familiar?

No insult intended, but you might try turning the idle adjustment up a bit....Never know, might help!
