Head studs
12 Jun 2013 02:24 - 12 Jun 2013 02:33
I'm redoing the top end on my 82 LTD 1000..
It has the big studs in it..
Will the the Torque Settings for the stock smaller studs work or is there a different Torque Settings for the big studs?
Here is a pic of what I'm talking about
Thanks
Kenneth

If you mean you've got HD cylinder studs from APE etc installed you can go up to 42lb.
You don't need to go that high if the rest of the motor is std but it is recommended if you have re-done the top end with higher compression pistons like Wiseco's etc.

Pull the 42 lbs. No reason not to and J's were often leakers anyway

If you have stock cylinder studs, then no more than 29 ft/lbs. It appears you might not have the Kawasaki service manual for the motorcycle. If not, they are readily available on eBay. Kawasaki part number 99924-1026-02...overall, excellent manual.

Thanks guys
I wasn't sure if they had any different torque settings than the old small ones or not...
I also understand that the cam caps should torque at 8ft LBS and not 12ft LBS...
I always thought that was way to much torque...
Glad I found you guys and thanks for the info and this great site....
Mcdroid yes I have a Kawasaki service manual and a Clymer manual..
Nether stated anything about the bigger studs...

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!! That is one of the few drawbacks to the FSM!

Careful using the factory nuts with some aftermarket studs. They're shallower inside and can bottom out giving false torque settings. The APE nuts are deeper and this isn't a problem with them.

Thanks guys.. great info here...
kimsmith4807 I thought about that today when I was looking at it..
I think I'll go ahead and order a new set of nuts..
Do they come in a chrome acorn or a open top nut?
Never mind, I found them at Z1....
Thanks again...
