KZ 750 LTD: Shaft to Chain Conversion?
27 May 2013 16:54
hi all, just registered on here after purchasing a '84 KZ 750 LTD for 3 hundred roo skins
i named the project the Nightrider after the Mad Max movie character, so lets remember the Nightrider when we look into the night sky!
well, my idea is to convert it to the chain drave using gear shafts and left cover from a chain driven Kz 750, or still better, from a GPZ750 Turbo, any one has those shafts and cover at hand to compare with mine?

No way Jose! 750 turbo trans won even fit in a standard GPz750. I believe the crank and the top end (cylinder, head, valves, etc) from the Turbo are the only parts that will fit the other 750s. The Turbo is in a class of it's own.

Any 750 four trans except 83-85 GPz750 and Turbo, and the six speed trans from the 550's and early GPz600, will fit.
Left covers off the 550, 650, 750 four and twin all fit, assuming you mean the trans cover.
650 and 750 engine cases interchange, but pre 81 650s have a kickstarter.

thanks heaps steell!
sure i mean the tranny cover, another coupla questions, shall i have to swap crancases or could keep mine? then, you said the shafts are the same, does it mean i can use my secondary shaft and fix a sprocket on to it, or perhaps its sprocket part is different and i'd need a replacement? thanks in advance bro!

You'll have to check the output shaft, I have no idea if you can put a sprocket on it.

Why in the world would you want to get rid of shaft and go to chain? Thats like going from fuel injection to carbs or electronic ignition back to points. Motorcycles are possibly the only vehical that most prefer 1890s technology in the drivetrain.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

i don't mind converting a bike to efi (and turbo lol)(and i did it a few times) but the shaft?! any bike fan would tell ya why: weight saving and wider tyre.. when i see a moto gp bike with the shaft drive then i'l undertand im stuck back in the 19th century

find 10 distinctions
1. clutch actuators r different and on different sides
i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r638/Surt_R...htrider/DSCF0113.jpg
i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r638/Surt_R...htrider/DSCF0114.jpg
2 naturally different left covers,
lets see under them
shafty

i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r638/Surt_R...htrider/DSCF0121.jpg
chainy
i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r638/Surt_R...htrider/DSCF0122.jpg
but both r having the same set of threaded m6 holes! so u dont have to swap casesfor the chain conversion

Anything can be done, given enough talent and ambition...
My motor builder is in the process of building a Flattrack racer using a Honda CX500 as the motor. He is turning the motor sideways in a custom (duh!) frame and converting from shaft to chain! Good luck with your project. Paul
