26 May 2013 12:51
had all my cam cap bolt holes helicoiled...well one didnt really take...the helicoil is still in there..was wondering if it would be safe to drill out the hole that has the bad coil in it and timesert it or if i should try getting the old helicoil out first..? sorry for the long post...

remove the helicoil first ...... grab the wire with needle nose or hemostat if possible or pry the end of the wire out with a pick and then grab it.......

+1 on turboking's suggestion and +1 on using timeserts...they work well and I have used them on a number of cam cap bolt holes to replace helicoils. Remember to retorque at 8-10 ft-lbs (96-120 in-lbs) max. Also remember, if replacing a hole that had a dowel in it, to set the timesert deep enough to accomodate the dowel.
