Valve Shims

Does anyone know if the valve shims on a J motor are hardened or treated in a manner that would cause an issue if I precision ground the thickness just a bit? Thanks.

They are hardened. Do not grind them.

This is what happens when you remove the hard surface of a shim and put it in the wrong way up...

I pulled this one out of a bike I bought. The shim said 2.65mm on the back, read 2.50mm on the edge, but read under 2.00mm in the center. The cam lobe was toast - down over 1/10th of an inch...

Thanks Jeff. Perfect reason to not do what I was thinking of doing!
