Starter Problems

Okay so i have a 1981 kz750E and im having troubles with my starter/solenoid. When i attempt to start my bike the starter will work and the engine will crank over but just for a second then the starter motor will just spin so the engine never cranks long enough for the bike to actually run. Any ideas on what i should do ? thanks

Sounds like the solenoid is no good and just not staying engaged.

I'd wait for a few more opinions before making a decision because I'm far from an expert haha, but it seems like that is the most likely cause.
Also try checking the voltage when cranking at the starter, I know my starter sort of turns the motor over but just doesn't seem to have the juice and I've got a new battery.
Another possibility is that the starter gear maybe partially stripped.

Oh okay. I can look at the gear and see if any of the teeth are screwed up

It's a bad starter clutch.

I believe there's an article in the Filebase (or somewhere hidden at the top of the page) that tells you how to replace the starter clutch without pulling the motor.

Parts are available from Z1 Enterprises.

650's are the same, and I think that's what the article is on.
