gas in crank case?? please help!! was created by steveo_4192003
my bike flooded out and wont sart. i left pet-cock on all night, so i decided to re-set floats and do the oil change while i was at it! i pulled the drain-plug and oil was watered down with gas!! it was not very thick and ran out pretty quick
i did set floats, so this wont happen agian!!!
they were WAY out, and it ran good but fouled out 2 sets of plugs in 1 week
all that gas that flooded my bike, went past the rings and in the crank case. it was hard to kick over and didnt want to start. i did get a few big back-fires through the tail pipes!
should i be able to keep pet-cock on all night and not flood my bike??

If everything works perfectly, then yes you should be able to leave the petcock on all the time.
But, do you really want to take the chance?

Your needles or seats are probably worn or dirty. You would be probably do yourself a favor and rebuild the carbs. Buy the kits, but only replace what you have too. I have been told that the mains and pilot jets in some kits are suspect. Clean the carbs in a good carb cleaner solution, you can use plain white vinegar to finish the clean up and the brass parts will look new. Don't leave them in the vinegar too long, just long enough to clean them to near new.
While you're doing that, take the tank off and clean it out too. Check for rust, rust residue can get inbetween the needle or block a jet or passageway in the carb. Replace you hoses too if they are old, it is a cheap insurance to take at this time. If you can fit one in, put an inline fuel filter from one of your local car parts stores. Get the smallest one you can, stay away from the glass ones though. There are several old articles here on cleaning the tank if you find rust in there. Don't forget to take your finger and wipe the top of the inside of the tank near the filler hole. See if you get rust on your finger or if it feels rough and pitted. Tanks rust above where the gas is, that is why it is important to store a bike with a full tank of gas for winter as it won't rust where the gas touches it.
What type of petcock do you have? Is it "On", "Off" & "Res"? If it isn't you have vacuum controlled type and the diaphragm or other parts are bad. (sorry didn't note what your bike has for a stock petcock).
Keep us posted.
