Gasket Sealants? was created by nivlac
Getting ready to start buttoning up this kz1100 and kind of wondering about gasket and sealing application. Do we use it and if so where?

Take a look in the Kawasaki Service Manual. In there you should find that it tells you exactly where to use sealants. As an example, for the KZ650 there is just one little section of the clutch cover gasket that must be coated with liquid gasket and this is shown in the "Disassembly - Engine Installed" section. I use Hondabond 4. Ed

Yamabond, hondabond, suzukibond- they are all the same thing and are hylomar based sealants. I have used yamabond on my troublesome cam cover and it worked great.
I recently just bought a tube of hylomar universal blue racing sealant. Great stuff.

I believe they all originate at Three Bond and are branded differently for the bike makers. It should be noted that there are different flavors for different applications, so care should be taken to pick the right product for the specific task being performed. Here's the Three Bond site:

Nothing on most gaskets.
If they have a kind of shiny surface, they already have sealant on them.
I ALWAYS use wheel bearing grease on cam cover & clutch cover gaskets.
When you are ready to assemble lay the gasket on something flat on newspaper,
dab a finger tip with some grease and rub it into both sides.
It will soak it up and make it swell a bit. Don't wait to see it, just put it on.
Oil can't pass the grease and it seals little nicks from scrapers.
PLUS they are reusable.
My last cam cover gasket lasted something like 15 years until I stepped on it on the floor.
Never even a mist from it, and yes I do check my valves often !

That's interesting to know. I used water proof bearing grease on my cylinder head base gasket. Nothing on my head gasket. And copper spray on the valve cover (reused old one), stator cover and oil pan gaskets. No leaks in any of them. Trying to see which one will come off the easiest when its time to take it apart. I'm happy to hear that the grease makes it easy to come off.

always use copper spray gasket from permatex on both sides of all paper gaskets...let it set up about 2 to 3 minutes and it works great..
