Oil filter spring washer

Dropping oil/ filter on my 78 KZ1000 and noticed the washer missing that sits between spring and filter,is it just there to protect the rubber part of filter,or does it have another function?

Just to protect the rubber. Totally worthless and doesn't need to be there.

Yes.
Although not essential, the washer prevents end of the spring from pressing and/or twisting against the rubber part inside the filter, especially during installation.

Even though it might not hurt anything being missing I would still replace it. It's still an active part so any dealer can get it. Ronayers.com lists the price at $1.78 so it's no big expense. Ed
