Once every ten years, whether it needs it or not. ;)

the recommended oil change is 30k miles or 3 years, no wonder it looks like that.

But seriously, the bike has been sitting in my shed for the last ten years. I'm going through everything before I even try to start it.

That's what Motul synthetic looks like after a decade. :S

 It would be an opportune time to clean that part before reassembly.

You were very smart to take a look in there. Otherwise, who knows what damage that sludge may have caused if pumped throughout the oil journals, bearings, etc. Ed

"You were very smart to take a look in there"... Amen to that one Ed... ;)
Simple Green the piss out of her innards, oil passages, and with everything follow up with air & clean every nook and cranny... Yeah it's tedious but she'll be like new when completed.

As for a 30K mile/ 3 year oil change recommendation on a 30 year old design, really... ?

I think I may be due for an oil pump grunge bustin' - it sounds like a bearing is about to spin and then it clears up.

Yeah, I'll definitely be re-checking all of my oil passages. I gave everything a good shot of parts cleaner and compressed air before I put the cases back together, but I think I'll do it again. And maybe once more after that, just to be sure. :P

I found a little of this sludge around the sides of the oil pan, and a bit at the bottom of the clutch housing, but nowhere near as much as what was in the pump. I wonder why so much of it collected in there?

Man, I sure am glad I popped that screen off. The crud wasn't really visible from the outside, but there was some old pieces of sealant and other debris on the screen, so I thought I'd better take a look inside. Then I was like  .
