TOPIC:

I have a chance to pick up a bike at a reasonable price. It will be a donor bike for a chopper project this winter.

My question.....it is a shaft drive which is not cool for a chopper. I have never seen the inner workings of a shaftie. Can it be converted to chain drive at the engine relatively simply?

It is a 79 GS850. Let me know.

Just an opinion here, but shaft drive bikes do indeed make good/cool chops. As far as converting it to chain, well there is no kit but with enough $$$ you can have it done.

I have a 1000ST and I personally think it would make a great chopper. Would clean up the lines of the back end nicely. Unless you were planning to install a rear end from another bike...

If you could find the bottom end to a chain-driven model of your bike you could probably convert it. Or at least swap cases and keep the pistons, crank, cylinders and head form your original...

Don't know about the soozoo GS850 but the GS1000G can not be converted to chain drive. The case and gearbox are way different. IIRC, the litre kawasakis have a shaft drive adapter mounted to same gearbox-case that the chain drive models use.

If it's a budget project, just keep the shaft drive.
