79' KZ1000 motor was created by dtkid
Are there any differences in the motors of the 1979' KZ1000 "shafties" and the regular "chain-drive" machines?

I know that the Suzuki shafties are 8-valve machines and the chain-drive of the same make are 16-valve machines.

Although I have yet to begin to re-build my 79' KZ1000 shafty I'm tryin' to get as much info as possible.

I have manuals for all my other bikes but the manual for my Kaw has not arrived yet.

The 79 shaft is the same base engine as the 79 KZ1000A (MKII). Of course the shaft drive output of the engine is unique to the shaft model. The 79LTD engine is more or less an older 1978 spec engine.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As noted, the engine bears a strong family resemblance to the other KZ1000 engines. The bevel gear case, external shift mechanism, neutral light are different than earlier models and I think the clutch is larger. The cylinder/pistons and cylinder head appear much like the other KZ1000 models... there are the same number of case bolts and in the same location and the cam chain bits are pretty much the same stuff.

Mt "79" engine is a markII. My "77" is not a Mark II.
I am going to sell my "80" Mark two engine. Roy
