Clutch help. was created by zukdave
OK been having issue's with my clutch dragging since
I put my motor back together so time for a new clutch.

I really want one of Jay's Track King drag race clutches
but called today and was told no go for my '83 ZX750A1 motor
but the web site does list one for a KZ650.

Can some one cross the part number's for the steel's and friction
plate to seen what will fit.
I've been lookin for 2 hour's and can't find a crossover list.

Kaw. number's are 13088-030 and 13089-022

Since the KZ650 and the ZX750-A1 both use the same part numbers for the steel and friction clutch plates and the same number of plates I would have thought the Trac King clutch plates for one would fit both engines. APE shows part #CK650K for the KZ650, but it doesn't mention the KZ750. I see a note on the following link that says the clutch pack fits the Z650 and Z750 but not the ZEPHYR750, but I see no mention of the GpZ-750. The second link says the clutch pack fits the KZ650 and KZ750. Was there any explanation as to why it won't fit? Ed

4TKZ thanks for that link.

Ed same thing I was thinking as best I know they swap
so I'm going to pull the factory clutch out of
my old 650 motor tomorrow and see.
If it work's I'll call Jay and get the 650 clutch.

dragging is usually an adjustment issue.

Slipping might possibly result from worn plates; but is often an adjustment issue.

If needed, there's a link in my signature for help with navigating kawasaki.com to determine which clutch plates are common to various models.

Good Fortune! :)

Yea, I agree, dragging really can't be a bad clutch. Either an adjustment or problems with the gears binding on the shaft due to assembly problems.

Patton it's not the adjustment as it
the same as before I had the motor apart.

If I ride it and build some heat in it it
work's but then back cold the next day it drag's.

I may be crazy, havent taken the pills in a few days.
Anyway Im thinking the 650/750 discs may be the same as 900/1000/1100,might be fewer of each in the smaller motor Im not sure. :)

If you put thin steel core friction plates in your bike YOU WILL REGRET IT. They will bet the living hell out of your clutch basket. That will lead to a fussy clutch lever, dragging....etc.

Fresh OEM frictions, inspect your steels. Glass bead, steel wool or scotch bright those. New OEM springs with a washer about the thickness of an NGK B series spark plug washer. It will hook ;)

Dragging is normal on a cold motor...ie start in neutral on center stand and the rear wheel spins like it's in gear.

Yes Wireman...you need your meds....DAILY :woohoo:

Larry when it was apart there were some hot spots on the steels os I use'd
a scotch brite pad on my angle grinder then some 300 grit wet
with solvent to polish them.

Put it together just like it was and now I have to use the front
brake to hold the bike still in gear bogging the motor.
As for building heat I'm talkin 2 or 3 drag strip launch's 8000 grand
slide the clutch out just under tire spin.

Been riding for over 40 year's and have had a few
drag bike so not my first time having a clutch apart
just not seeing what's wrong.

Like I said before it can also be the gears binding. Some gears free float on the shafts some are spline drive. If the free floaters are somehow not floating freely, that will cause this. I had this on one of my KZ650s. I found I was really dragging badly, but it wasn't the clutch. I took the clutch plates completely out, so the clutch was out of the picture, and at this point the engine sprocket should spin free with no connection to the crankshaft. I found mine was still connected, disassembled the transmission and found one of the free floating gears was a really tight fit on the shaft. This may or may not be a rare thing, don't know, but a possibiliy, so if you do remove the clutch, try turning the engine sprocket at that time and make sure it spins freely. If not, theres a transmission problem.

Ron when I split the case's I flip the motor and just pulled the lower case leaving the gear's in the upper case.
If I pull the clutch plate's the inner hub spins free in neutral
like it should.
Motor off it shift's all gears just like before but
running it will not come out of first gear.
