Has anyone successfully installed a Bikemaster HID conversion on one of these rectangular reflectors on some of our KZs?

The original H4 bulb has a flat spot for the spring to push down, and the ring slots into the .."frame".

The replacement, the HID bulb, seems to offer no way of keeping the bulb in - the spring can't sit on a flat spot and the metal lock ring is too small to fit over the plastic part of the bulb.

I'd love to hear about what other folks have done to make this happen!

On the stock headlight bulb, there's a rubber dust cover, is your's missing?

Nope, there's no black rubber dust cover. The photo you attached looks like a round light. Mine is the rectangular one that came with the L3. My other L3's headlight also didn't have one, IIRC.

Here's the HID bulb thing.

So, I figured it out: it takes some disassembly of the bulb thing. You have to unscrew the black plastic thing from the metal thing where it says "lock/open". When you take it out you can use the spring to hold down the metal and plastic receptacle. Once the spring and lockring are in place, you can screw the bulb back in.

Now I just have to figure out how to get the wiring taken care of and then be disappointed by the results!

A lot will be determined by the reflector and how well it cuts off the beam vertically. I put one on my Concours and it turns night into day. I was not afraid to ride after dark anymore until I discovered how thick the bugs are then! Good fortune.
