Got my shims measured was created by Kitten Tooth
Alrighty. I got the shims measured on my 1981 KZ1000LTD. Since cylinder 1 exhaust, cylinder 3 intake, and cylinder 4 exhaust were all tight i went ahead and pulled the shims. (couldnt afford a micrometer or shim changing tool until now).

So i got...

#1 exhaust measured- 2.751 and has the numbers 275 printed on it
#3 intake measured- 2.805 and has 280 printed on it
#4 exhaust measured- 2.856 (dont know what was printed on it)

What size shims should i order for this monster? its getting warm outside, im 18, and i got a woman that wants to ride on the back B) hahahaha

Thanks guys,
KT

This is what I did!

First went to ebay and bought a factory service manual.
Second I did a search on this forum for shim advice.
Third I read everything I could to understand tolerances and how to determine what shims could be swapped around and what shims needed to be bought.

Good place to start is probably go down two sizes on each, so #1 a 265, #3 a 270, #4 a 275. You already have a 275 out of #1 for use in #4, so trade or order the 265 and 270 and remeasure is all you can do. It may take a couple tries.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Tim....

You have to go through and measure all valve clearances with a feeler gauge. Then it's a matter of what size would be required to place all clearances to spec....

1973-1978 clearances from 0.05-0.10mm are acceptable.
1979/80 clearances 0.05-0.15mm are acceptable.

When you say tight, what values...?
Under .05mm (.002") then go a thinner size or two shim, possibly 3 sizes.
Manually rotate the crank (17mm nut) FULL 360 to fully seat the sim, release valve spring etc... & Re-measure your clearances after re-shiming.

make sure that before your install your valve cover back on that you release your timing chain tensioner, if not when you removed the cover it extended to make up the clearance.an when you reinstall it, it will put to much pressure on the timing chain and cause excessive guide wear and maybe worse i know from experience  good luck
