You might try each on a scrap piece of material to see which affect you prefer,if you want to paint the cylinder Id say the glass beading leaves a rougher surface which is better for paint to stick too. :)

I'm rebuilding my kz1100. How can I bring the engine finish back? I'm thinking maybe a soda or sand blasting the fins/ exterior of the jugs. What about the head fins? What kind of paint?

I lightly sand blasted mine and painted it with PJ1 satin black engine paint.

Take a look at:

www.duplicolor.com/products/enginePaint/

DE1615 Aluminum is a near dead-on match for the original engine finish. Easy to use, durable ceramic (spray-can) finish...available at NAPA Auto Parts, or just about anywhere (click where to buy).

:)

Cylinder head and cylinder were painted with the above.
