kz750 ltd h2 - starter clutch repair/failures? was created by steelhorseangel
Hi riders

In my last engine post i discovered that my starter clutch had failed.
This starter spinning problem started in the cold weather.
I was unable to do this technical job myself. I've limited knowledge and
I felt best to pay a bike mechanic. Again i was ripped off. The nice mechanic
Turned out to be a creative accountant and made a big meal ticket out of
My bikes starter problem!

He brought the bike back last friday, 'some 6 weeks!' later and gave me a large invoice
For changing the starter clutch kit. He broke the new kit. Then charged me again.
He checked and shimmed the valves charged again. £450 brit pounds!
He started my bike up. Sounded new and made my day.
The next day 'from a cold night' of being back in the garage.
I half choked it, started it to hear a really loud metal on metal sound.
The bike sounded really bad. I had just paid for new insurance and road tax.
I obviously wont ride my bike in this terrible mechanical state.
I've now phoned him. He will have to re do the work again, at his cost.

Q) is there a modification that would cure forever the failing starter clutch problem?

Q) i' ve read on this forum, that a new starter kit, can fail again 3 months, what use is this.

The mechanic told me it takes him 4 hours to do a starter clutch kit replacement!

Q) why use such tiny springs for such an important job?

Q) has any kz rider modified this fragile starter clutch?

What a brilliant bike, let down by the above, any suggestions riders please?

Change all the starter clutch was advised to me today, like trying to find the Holy Grail!

Thank you for your advice kz riders!

What "kit" are you talking about? Have the mechanic tell you exactly which parts he replaced, and have him show you the old parts he removed. If he did not replace ALL the starter clutch parts you will still have the problem you describe.

hi ed!

remember me angel?

how are you!...:-)

many thanks for your reply!

the parts that i bought and he
did replace was the rollers, cups and springs
only. he advised me that he's examined
all the gears for wear. told me after he'd
fitted it, the starter sprocket, had some
wear on the 'grab face'. why fit if it had wear?

ed, are you saying that all gears
should've been replaced?

i can't find them in the uk.
do you know what i'll need for a
complete starter clutch please?

many thanks ed

hi donthav

thanks for your message!

the clutch worked perfectly.
on starting the bike, it wouldn't start
properly. it just spun. the starter clutch
is a common fault on the kz's, also
other makes!

regards and thanks

I don't know that it was installed correctly, there should be a mechanism that pushes the gear on the starter motor out when it is in use.

Right! Why fit it if it had wear? He should have replaced it. They are not at all difficult to acquire; any Kawasaki dealer can simply order one because they are still an "Active" part.
